Biography
Dr Abed worked as a consultant psychiatrist and Hon Senior Lecturer in the NHS in England for 25 years and as a medical director of a mental health Foundation Trust in England for 7 years. He is currently a member of the Mental Health Tribunals in England. Dr Abed has had a longstanding interest in the application of evolutionary theory to the understanding of mental health and mental disorder. He has published novel theories and hypotheses on a number of psychiatric conditions including eating disorders, OCD and schizophrenia and has collaborated with colleagues across the world in testing some of these theories. Dr Abed has been a vocal advocate for the inclusion of evolutionary theory into undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and has played a central role in the establishment of the evolutionary psychiatry special interest group (EPSIG) at the Royal college of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) in the UK. He is currently secretary of the section of evolutionary psychiatry at the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and is also founding chair of EPSIG at the RCPsych
